Barbara
Vivien's commentary: Well... when I think of Barbie, I think of girlhood... of generational trauma and yearning for change. I think of my mother's dark eyes and I think of how she liked her tea. I think of the vest she always used to bake biscuits, so white from the flour, so yellow from the butter... I think of everything she dreamed and gave away for that vest, those biscuits, the tea and most importantly the dark eyes. Then, I think about when I first saw Barbie. I don't think a doll is solely important for all of this movement, women had trousers before Barbie, didn't we? But I think... it is of great importance to show to young girls everything they could be besides the ordinary mother-wife. I have a great deal of respect for mothers and wives but because they've chosen this life, because they've chosen a life that gives them joy. And I am deeply in love with the idea that women can find joy besides that too. This didn't start with Barbie, obviously, but Goddess did she make it easier... well, there is also the consumism and the capitalist agenda but, my, what in this world is perfect?
Keep up and keep on, child
you're a requiem for a dream
keep your heart and your mind mild
you are not what you seem
You try to claim the world and move on with your life
your words won't heal the hurt
but everyone is hurt so don’t you worry, child
we’re all just tracking the blur
Now maturing's imminent and this is life
it’s not what they tell you
To all your light and your pain they are blind
and there’s nothing you can do
You can try to bite and you can try to scratch
but you can never go back
when it’s a state of mind, it follows you anywhere
from Chester to Hackensack
Cities become never waving
unwavering for me
if you have a heart, it’s racing
beating to the point it bleeds
Girlhood is growing fruits
in between bats and pests
dodging then you finally grew
you wish for a lone green crest
I was just a girl
eating a woman’s grief
I was just a girl
avoiding an innocence thief
Someday this will be past, you’ll come to mourn it
you’re a requiem for a dream
someday the dark night will give place to morning
you’re greater than you seem
Claim the world, this is now your life
your words won’t heal the hurt
if someone told you it’s possible, it’s a lie
but you use hurt to become the first
To become a woman to make stars blind
it’s not what they tell you
but you can always take them by surprise
do what no one thought you could do
You don’t wish to bite and you don’t wish to scratch
you won’t ever go back
it is your state of mind, you take it anywhere
and where the hell is Hackensack?
Cities become never waving
unwavering for me
if you have a heart, it’s racing
beating to the point it bleeds
Girlhood is growing fruits
in between bats and pests
dodging then you finally grew
you wish for a lone green crest
I can dance in every room of my home
I’m a requiem for my dream
I can ask my greatest friends to come
I’m greater than what they deem
I am my own God, I’ll claim the world
my words can’t heal the hurt
but I’ve felt greatness since I was a girl
rising over from the dirt
(Oh, oh, oh)
Oh, Barbara, you’re free
build your wood house on your tree
you don’t ever have to flee
you were always here with me
Oh, Barbara, you’re free
build your wood house on your tree
you don’t ever have to flee
you were always here with me
Cities are still never waving
unwavering for me
if you have a heart, it’s racing
beating to the point it bleeds
Girlhood is growing fruits
in between bats and pests
But I swear me and my crew
We will conquer our green crest
Cities are still never waving
unwavering for me
if you have a heart, it’s racing
beating to the point it bleeds
Girlhood is growing fruits
in between bats and pests
But I swear me and my crew
We will conquer our green crest
I was just a girl
eating a woman’s grief
I was just a girl
avoiding an innocence thief
Barbara told me
there’s something else inside
in my heart, you see?
it makes even the sun blind
